Michael was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in West Caldwell. He attended Essex Catholic High School and graduated from Seton Hall University on a ROTC scholarship. During these years he formed life-long fraternal bonds with his brothers of The National Society of Pershing Rifles and was a proud member of their Drill team. In 1968 he graduated with a degree in marketing and was also commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. He was deployed to Vietnam and proudly served with the 25th Infantry Division, being promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. As an infantry platoon leader, he conducted combat and pacification missions in the Iron Triangle area and was decorated with the Bronze Star and Army Air Medal for meritorious service. While serving in the line of duty he was exposed to Agent Orange and other toxins. Later in his life this exposure had an impact on his health, and he faced these medical challenges with extraordinary grace and strength.
While in college, Michael met his future wife, Darielle (Oberto), and they were married in 1970 upon his return from Vietnam. They moved to Westfield where their two sons were raised. Michael obtained a master’s degree in marketing as a night student at Seton Hall and had a very successful 36-year career with Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals, retiring as a Senior Director of Marketing and Director of Trade Sales. He was an avid golfer and community service played an important part of his life. He was actively involved with many organizations including the Jaycee and Optimist Club.
Michael’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones and friends. His service to the United States was one of his proudest accomplishments and his deep patriotism was always evident.
